How your take-home pay is calculated

Your monthly take-home pay is gross monthly pay minus your share of social insurance and income tax. Gross monthly pay is your annual salary divided by 12. Tax-free allowances such as the meal allowance are excluded before insurance and tax are worked out.

Take-home pay = gross monthly pay − (pension + health + long-term care + employment insurance) − (income tax + local income tax)
  • National pension: 4.75% of taxable pay, charged on income between ₩410,000 and ₩6,590,000 a month (July 2026 to June 2027).
  • Health insurance: 3.595%. Long-term care is 13.14% of the health premium.
  • Employment insurance: 0.9%. Mandatory for F-2, F-5 and F-6 visas; many other visas join only if they apply.
  • Income tax: from the official simplified withholding table. Local income tax adds 10% of the income tax.

Standard tax or the 19% flat tax?

Foreign employees who started working in Korea on or before 31 December 2026 can choose to pay a flat 19% income tax (20.9% with local tax) for up to 20 years, instead of the normal progressive rates. The flat rate applies to your total pay including tax-free allowances, and you lose all deductions and credits.

For most people the standard table is cheaper. The flat rate usually starts to pay off only above roughly ₩150–200 million a year, depending on your dependents and deductions. See the flat tax guide for how to apply.

Frequently asked questions

Do foreigners pay the same tax as Koreans?
Yes, by default. Foreign residents use the same withholding table and year-end tax settlement as Korean workers. The only foreigner-specific option is the 19% flat rate, which you can choose if it is cheaper for you.
Why is my payslip slightly different from this result?
Your employer may report a different monthly income for insurance, pay allowances on a different schedule, or use a withholding rate of 80% or 120% that you selected. Bonuses paid in a given month also raise that month's tax.
Do I get the tax back when I leave Korea?
Monthly withholding is an estimate. When you leave mid-year your employer settles your tax for the months you worked, which often produces a small refund. See the leaving Korea checklist.
Is the meal allowance always tax-free?
Up to ₩200,000 a month of meal allowance is tax-free if your company does not also provide free meals. Your contract or payslip should show it as a separate item.
